Awesome Balance Of Bank Account

This is AWESOME … something we should all remember!

A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, with his hair fashionably combed and shaved perfectly, even though he is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today.

His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready.

As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on his window.

‘I love it, ‘  he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.Balance of Bank Accounts

‘Mr. Jones, you haven’t seen the room; just wait.’

‘That doesn’t have anything to do with it,’ he replied. ‘Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is  arranged .. it’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it…

‘It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful  for the ones that do.’

‘Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away.. Just for this time in my life.’

‘Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you’ve put in.’

‘So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories!’

‘Thank you for your part in filling my Memory Bank. I am still depositing.’

‘Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
                        1. Free your heart from hatred.
                        2. Free your mind from worries.
                        3. Live simply.
                        4. Give more.’

Till next time, wishing you great success in wealth, health and happiness.

50 Habits – Keys To Highly Successful People

In a time of great difficulty for all of us, we can very easily lose sight of those habits that we’ve developed that have worked for  us in the past.. External events, now more than ever, create the need for focus on "where we are" and "where we are going."

What is success, anyway? Hundreds of books have been written on the meaning and the keys to being successful.

As always, my personal motto is K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid!) The following 50 characteristics of habits, I believe, sums it up in simple terms.

~~~~~
Success is really a profound individual perception. Not only is there the commercialized notion of keys to successfulsuccess, bred by whatever culture you live in, but individually, success is different for everyone, and changes as you grow older.
The first step, of course, is to set your goals.
But there are also certain habits and characteristics that more successful people display than others.
1. They look for and find opportunities where others see nothing.
2. They find lessons while others only see problems.
3. They are solution focused.
4. They consciously and methodically create their own success.
5. They may be fearful, but they are not controlled or limited by fear.
6. They ask the right questions — the ones which put them in a positive mindset and emotional state.
7. They rarely complain.
8. They don’t blame, and take complete responsibility for their actions and outcomes.
9. They always find a way to maximize their potential, and use what they have effectively.
10. They are busy, productive and proactive.
11. They align themselves with like-minded people.
12. They are ambitious.
13. They have clarity and certainty about what they want.
14. They innovate instead of imitate.
15. They don’t procrastinate.
16. They are life-long learners.
17. They are glass half full people, while still being practical and down-to-earth.
18. They consistently do what they need to do, regardless of how they are feeling on a given day.
19. They take calculated risks.
20. They deal with problems quickly and effectively.
21. They don’t believe in, or wait for, fate, destiny, chance or luck.
22. They take action before they have to.
23. They are more effective than most at managing their emotions.
24. They are good communicators.
25. They have a plan for their life and they work methodically to turn that plan into a reality.
26. They become exceptional by choice.
27. They work through the tough stuff that most would avoid.
28. They have identified what is important to them and they do their best to live a life which is reflective of those values.
29. They have balance. They know that money is a tool and ultimately, it’s just another resource.
30. They understand the importance of discipline and self-control.
31. They are secure in their sense of self-worth.
32. They are generous and kind.
33. They are happy to admit mistakes and apologize.
34. They are adaptable and embrace change.
35. They keep themselves in shape physically.
36. They work hard and are not lazy.
37. They are resilient.
38. They are open to, and more likely to act upon, feedback.
39. They don’t hang out with toxic people.
40. They don’t invest time or emotional energy into uncontrollable things.
41. They are happy to swim against the tide.
42. They comfortable with their own company.
43. They set high standards for themselves.
44. They don’t rationalize failure.
45. They know how to relax, enjoy what they have in their life and to have fun.
46. Their career is not their identity, it’s their job.
47. They are more interested in what is effective than in what is easy.
48. They finish what they start.
49. They realize that not only are they physical and psychological beings, but emotional and spiritual creatures as well.
50. They practice what they preach.
Tamiflu (for H1N1) Causes Sickness And Nightmares in Children
Tamiflu, used as "treatment for H1N1" causes sickness and nightmares in children, study in Great Britain finds.
Children report a range of side-effects, but the official advice is that Tamiflu is safe
More than half of children taking the swine flu drug Tamiflu experience side-effects such as nausea and nightmares, research suggests.
An estimated 150,000 people with flu symptoms were prescribed the drug through a new hotline and website last week, according to figures revealed yesterday.
Studies of children attending three schools in London and one in the South West showed that 51-53 per cent had one or more side-effects from the medication, which is offered to everyone in England with swine flu symptoms.
The research by the Health Protection Agency emerged as Sir Liam Donaldson, the Chief Medical Officer for England, said that swine flu infections “may have reached a plateau”.
Peter Holden, the British Medical Association’s lead expert on swine flu, suggested that Tamiflu was being overused and did not need to be offered to everyone with mild symptoms. “The National Pandemic Flu Service has been a great success, and was needed to take the pressure off GPs,” he said. “But the threshold for getting Tamiflu should be quite high.
“For patients who are not in the high-risk groups — such as pregnant women, people with bad asthma or with suppressed immune systems — this virus typically causes mild symptoms and does not require a course of Tamiflu. Patients in the at-risk groups should be referred to their GP, who will use their clinical judgment.”
A total of 103 children took part in the London study, of which 85 were given the drug as a precaution after a Tamiflu H1N1classmate received a diagnosis of swine flu. Of those, 45 experienced one or more side-effects. The most common was nausea (29 per cent), followed by stomach pain or cramps (20 per cent) and problems sleeping (12 per cent). Almost one in five had a “neuropsychiatric side-effect”, such as inability to think clearly, nightmares and “behaving strangely”, according to the research, published in Eurosurveillance, a journal of disease.
Health officials in Japan have recommended against prescribing Tamiflu to teenagers over fears it causes a rise in “neuropsychiatric events”. The researchers said that clinical trials had shown that about 20 per cent of adults reported side-effects of either nausea or vomiting after taking Tamiflu.
Both the Department of Health and the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory products Agency said that the drug was safe, and that the benefits of treating early symptoms and avoiding potentially serious complications could outweigh the risks of side-effects.
Sir Liam said that despite a 10 per cent rise in the estimated number of cases in the week to Sunday, the latest figures reinforced “a growing impression we have had a peak”. He said that a surge would still be expected in the winter flu season, but added: “I think we are a little more confident we may be seeing a downturn in this flu.”
FDA Smoke Screen On E-cigarettes and Tobacco Cigarettes
From an article in the Washington Post (In its entirety!)
Thursday, August 6, 2009
FDA smoke screen on e-cigarettes
Dr. Elizabeth M. Whelan
At a time when the government is ostensibly trying to cut health costs, why is it trying to ban something that might help people quit smoking tobacco cigarettes, perhaps the most devastating health problem in the U.S.?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) held a press conference late last month to scare Americans about the so-called "e-cigarette" — claiming it was loaded with harmful "toxins" and "carcinogens." The agency was implicitly saying: Stay away from these newfangled, untested cigarette substitutes — better to stick with the real ones, the ones that we are more familiar with, the ones that cause over 450,000 deaths annually in the U.S.
In making its distorted, incomplete and misleading statement, FDA was violating its long-cherished tradition of sticking to sound science as the basis for its policies. And in doing so, it is putting the lives and health of millions of Americans at risk.
The truthful part of the FDA statement was that e-cigarettes have not been through formal efficacy and safety tests at the FDA, and they have only been around a few years. But in the press conference, here is what the FDA did not tell you but should have:
1 – Traditional cigarettes are lethal not because of the trace level presence of specific "carcinogens" and "toxins," but because by using them, smokers inhale enormous amounts of smoke — otherwise known as "products of combustion." It is the inhaled smoke that kills in so many ways — from cancers, cardiovascular and lung disease, and more.
2 – The cigarette was a relatively obscure product in our society until the invention of a cigarette rolling machine, and sales rose quickly prior to World War I.
Before that, tobacco was used relatively safely — in chew, pipes, cigars — because little if any smoke was inhaled. Cigarettes changed all of that.
3 -The e-cigarette — a cigarette-mimicking device made up of a battery, an atomizer and a cartridge — allows smokers to inhale, getting a dose of the nicotine they crave, and then sending steam out the other end (with little or no odor) to mimic the ritual and feel of smoking normal cigarettes.
4 – The FDA complained that the e-cigarette was a "nicotine-delivery system." Well, it got that much right. But again, it’s the smoke that kills, not the nicotine. Yes, nicotine is highly addictive, and it is what keeps the smoker hooked. But getting the nicotine without the smoke is an enormous health advantage for cigarette smokers (the nicotine inserts come in various strengths and the users can adjust them downward as they wish).
5 – The FDA has approved other nicotine-delivery systems in the form of gums and patches — and they have been abysmal failures. The smoking cessation rates using these devices is less than 15 percent after one year, condemning millions of addicted smokers to a lingering death. We desperately need other alternatives. But the FDA has now joined a long list of so-called public-health organizations — including the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids and the American Lung Association — whose collective motto seems to be "quit or die." Not only do they reject e-cigarettes, but they also condemn other smokeless products like snus, which have a mere fraction of the health risks associated with smoking cigarettes.
6 – More than 1 million smokers are now using the e-cigarette — a product that offers some, if not all, of the "social amenities" of the real thing — holding the cigarette, taking a drag, seeing a plume of "smoke." The FDA, lacking data that e-cigarettes pose a health hazard, was so desperate, it called on consumers to phone in adverse side effects of e-cigarettes so they could begin to build a case against them and proceed with their intended ban. They neglected, however, to request smokers who successfully quit using the e-cigarette to also call in.
Cigarette smoking remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States today. Any alternative acceptable to addicted smokers should be taken seriously. Instead of condemning the e-cigarette, the FDA should be sponsoring studies to evaluate its safety and efficacy — leaving it on the market in the interim.
Question: Who do you believe benefits from blocking the sale of the electronic cigarette? Please leave your comments at the end of this post.
Till next time, wishing you great success in health, wealth and the pursuit of happiness.
FDA: E-Cigarettes Bad, but Not Banned – Is This A Joke?
Is this some kind of sick joke? Or just another set of half-truths promulgated by special interest group(s). You know who they are!
The joke of it all is that on every street corner, candy store, gas station,  bodega, and supermarket, cigarettes are sold. REAL honest to goodness cigarettes that create "second-hand smoke;’ cause innumerable fires; have thousands of chemicals (added to the tobacco cigarettes by the tobacco companies) that are poisons as well as carcinogens and have contributed to this self-same government, spiraling health care costs.
By omission,  the following article with its nonsensical rantings, implies that these tobacco cigarettes are just peachy and the electronic cigarette is a most deadly contraption. The following are excepts from the original article.
FDA Issues Warning as Tests Find Electronic Cigarettes ‘Illegal’
By Daniel J. DeNoon
WebMD Health News
Reviewed By Louise Chang, MD
July 22, 2009 — The FDA today warned Americans not to use electronic cigarettes — but did not ban the sale of the smoke-free devices.
"The products we reviewed so far we found to be illegal," attorney Michael Levy, director of the FDA’s office of compliance in the division of drug evaluation and research, said today during an FDA news conference. But the FDA has not banned them because "There is pending litigation on the issue of FDA’s jurisdiction over e-cigarettes," Levy said.
Comment
:
If these electronic cigarettes were truly "illegal" they would have been banned like every other "illegal" substance.
Jonathan Winickoff, MD, chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics Tobacco Consortium, warned that the products seem "tailor-made to appeal to kids." He said the devices could addict kids to nicotine and turn them into smokers.
janet edin
Comment
:
Based on what? Tailor made to appeal to kids? Huh?
Jonathan Samet, MD, director of the Institute for Global Health at the University of Southern California, warned that e-cigarettes are nothing like FDA-approved nicotine-delivery devices shown to help people quit smoking. He noted that e-cigarettes have no proven benefits but very clear risks.
   Comment: By omission,  the good doctor as failed to mention that most, if not ALL of the other "quit smoking devices" that are presently FDA approved, contain carcinogens.
Since 2008, the FDA has been trying to prevent e-cigarettes from entering the country. To date, 50 shipments have been refused, but this has not stopped distribution and sale of e-cigarettes. Canada fully banned the devices in March 2009.
Comment
: Another half-truth . In fact the Canadian government allows the import and sale of the electronic equipment and "blank cartridges."  As a way around it’s own rules, the cartridges WITH nicotine must be ordered separately from outside of Canada.
The article was generous in allowing a 1-paragraph "rebuttal." That’s fair and balanced reporting, don’t you think?
"In our product you have nicotine or no nicotine, PEG, and some flavoring. In cigarettes you have nicotine, PEG, and 4,000 chemicals and 43 carcinogens," Youngblood last April told WebMD. "I am a proponent of harm reduction. People have rights and choices and should be allowed to make them."
- – - – - – - -
   As a parting comment I would like to add that while the electronic cigarette is not touted as a "quite smoking vehicle" many, many users of the electronic cigarette have simply quit. As a former 3-pack a day smoker, I can say that the electronic cigarette is a boon to smokers by "reducing the harm" as Youngblood states above.
Let us be honest. The issue is about money, power and special interest groups. These groups have never had the slightest interest in our health and well being. Let us not not buy this disingenuous detritus now.
Till next time, wishing you great success in health, wealth and the pursuit of happiness.
The Tax System – Explained with Beer
This explanation is too good not to share with YOU.
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100.  If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes. it would go something like this:
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
 The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
 So, that’s what they decided to do.
The ten men drank beer in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the bar owner threw them a curve.  "Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20."  Drinks for the ten now just cost $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes, so the first four men were unaffected.  They would still drink for free.  But what about the other six men – the paying customers?  How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his ‘fair share’?
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33.  But, if they subtracted that from everbody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.  So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.
 And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% savings).
The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $50 instead of $59 (15% savings).
 Each of the six was better off than before.  And, the first four continued to drink for free.  But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings.
"I only got a dollar out of the $20," declared the sixth man.  He pointed to the tenth man, "but he got $9!"
"Yeah, that’s right," exclaimed the fifth man.  "I only saved a dollar, too.  It’s unfair that he got nine times more than I!"
"That’s true!!" shouted the seventh man.  "Why should he get $9 back when I got only $2?  The wealthy get all the breaks!"
"Wait a minute." yelled the first four men in unison.  "We didn’t get anything at all.  The system exploits the poor!"
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him.  But, when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important.  They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!"
And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works.  The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction.  Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore.  In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.
Plant Your Own Garden, Decorate Your Own Soul
A dear friend sent this to me and I want to share it with you so that it may add a touch of beauty and delight  to your day as it did mine.
______
"I wrote this on an old piece of scratch paper and found it ina n old camera case. Don’t know where I read it so I can’t credit it’s owner."
After a while you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul.
And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning
And company doesn’t mean security.
And you begin to learn that kisses aren’t
contracts and presents aren’t promises.
And you begin to accept your defeats with
your head up and your eyes wide open
with the grace of an adult, not the
grief of a child.
And you learn to build all your roads on today
Because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for plans.
After a wu\hile you learn that even sunshine
Burns if you get too much.
So plant your garden
And decorate your own soul
Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers
And you learn that you really can endure
That you really are strong
And that you really do have worth.
Weekly Curry May Fight Brain Dementia
I just happened on an article from the BBC News, June 3, 2009 relating to fight brain dementia and the possible positive effect of Curcumin.that I wanted to share.
Dementia is a disease that is all to common and troubling to the baby boomers as they find themselves in the reversed role of caring for aging parents.
____
Eating a curry once or twice a week could help prevent the onset of      Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, a US researcher suggests.
The key ingredient is curcumin, a component of the spice turmeric. Curcumin appears to prevent the spread of amyloid protein plaques – thought to cause dementia – in the brain.
But the theory, presented at the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ annual meeting, has been given a lukewarm reception by UK experts. Amyloid plaques, along with tangles of nerve fibres, are thought to contribute to the degradation of the wiring in brain cells, eventually leading to symptoms of dementia.
Professor Murali Doraiswamy, of Duke University in North Carolina, said there was evidence that people who eat a curry meal two or three times a week have a lower risk of dementia.
He said researchers were testing the impact of higher doses – the equivalent of going on a curry spree for a week – to see if they could maximize the effect.
Animal studies Professor Doraiswamy told the meeting: "There is very solid evidence that curcumin binds to plaques, and basic research on animals engineered to produce human amyloid plaques has shown benefits."
"You can modify a mouse so that at about 12 months its brain is riddled with plaques. "If you feed this rat a curcumin-rich diet it dissolves these plaques. The same diet prevented younger mice from forming new plaques.
"The next step is to test curcumin on human amyloid plaque formation using newer brain scans and there are plans for that."
Professor Doraiswamy said a clinical trial was now underway at the University of California, Los Angeles, to test curcumin’s effects in Alzheimer’s patients.
He said research had also examined turmeric’s therapeutic potential for treating conditions such as cancer and arthritis. Good diet.
He stressed that eating a curry could not counter-balance the increased risk of dementia associated with a poor diet. owever, he said: "If you have a good diet and take plenty of exercise, eating curry regularly could help prevent dementia."
Professor Doraiswamy predicted it might be possible to develop a curry pill which had the same therapeutic effect.
However, Rebecca Wood, of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, stressed that people would need to eat a lot of curry – over 100g of turmeric curry powder – to get a clinical dose of curcumin.
She said: "Professor Doraiswamy’s unpublished research applies only to animal models; his hypothesis has not been confirmed in human clinical trials.
Till next time wishing you great success in health, wealth and the pursuit of happiness.
